Tips for Office Halloween Parties

October marks the beginning of the holiday season for many people, with Halloween kicking off the festivities. Holidays are a great time to add some pizzazz to the workplace, whether it’s through decorations or celebrations. If you’re planning to recognize this holiday in your place of business, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind.

  • Communicate costume guidelines early. If you are going to allow employees to work in costumes, make sure that you let them know what the parameters are early. You want to keep in mind workplace safety and the sensibilities of all employees when you lay down the law. It can be unpleasant and embarrassing to have to ask an employee to change when they come to work in an unsafe or offensive costume.
  • Encourage everyone to get involved. If you really want to see your employees get dressed up, let them know that upper management will getting in on the action. Employees are more likely to participate in costuming if they have confirmation that more people will be playing along.
  • Keep it simple. You don’t need to throw an all-out carnival to have a good time. An office potluck, some free candy, and you’re good to go. If it’s in the budget, a catered lunch is always appreciated. Parties like this held during business hours give employees a chance to step away from their duties and interact with their coworkers for a few minutes. This can go a long way in helping to establish a company’s culture and boost morale.
  • Consider letting employees go home early. Be realistic. Many employees have families that they want to get home and celebrate with. With Halloween falling on a Wednesday this year, trick-or-treaters are likely to be hitting the streets early. Try to find a way to let those who would like to leave early do so.
