Curing Your Workplace Burnout

In a perfect world, we would all love every minute of our jobs. We’d have excellent relationships with our coworkers and the tasks would be fulfilling and enjoyable. Plus, we’d be compensated what we’re really worth! In the real world, we often have to compromise on some of these aspects in order to realistically find work. This can lead to some frustration with your job from time to time. However, there’s a difference between occasional frustration and actual burnout. Burnout can seriously impact your ability to work efficiently. We gathered a few tips for spotting and dealing with burnout to help you avoid this work hazard.

  • A lack of control at work. Employees who have little or no control over their schedules, their duties, and time management are at a greater risk for burnout. One way to overcome this frustrating situation is to take a few minutes at the start of each day to outline some goals for the day. This can make tasks more manageable and give you a sense of achievement as you work through the day.
  • Physical symptoms of stress. Headaches, stomach issues, tight muscles, these can all be signs of excessive stress. The human body isn’t designed to handle stress on a long-term basis, so if your body is sending you signals that you need to take it easy, heed them. Get more rest. Anxiety can make it difficult to sleep, so develop a bedtime routine that helps you relax and get the rest you need.
  • Attitude changes. Dealing with constant stress from work can lead to a decrease in personal satisfaction. Some jobs explicitly require a positive attitude, like customer service positions, but any job will be less fulfilling if you go at it with a negative demeanor. This could be a good time to pick up a new hobby. Something that takes your mind off of work and helps you to express yourself in a way you enjoy.

Job burnout can be quite a hurdle to deal with. Sometimes, the only solution is changing jobs.
