Approaching gaps with honesty and positivity; never hide them from potential employers.
Have you given your resume to KB Staffing yet? If not, you should! We are always hiring. But what if you have some gaps in your work history? Are you worried that’s going to be a problem? It doesn’t have to be. Almost everyone has had times when they haven’t been employed–some instances may be have been by choice and others may not have been. Regardless of the situation, here are some ideas on how to address gaps in your resume.
Be Honest
The most important thing to remember is to be honest about your work history. Even if you were fired or laid off, be accurate in your dates. If you lie about something like that, you jeopardize your potential job when the truth comes out.
While it isn’t necessary to get into too many details of your personal life, if you took time off for a personal reason, say so. It is perfectly reasonable to leave the workforce to care for a new baby or an ailing relative. Life happens, and employers understand that. Even travel and downtime are completely reasonable. It’s OK to want to expand your horizons or rejuvenate after a stressful period in your life.
Be Positive
Whatever your reason for taking time off of work, there is a way to spin it to your advantage. Caring for a child or a relative emphasizes that you are committed to family and have a strong sense of responsibility. Going to school or pursuing certifications shows that you are dedicated to acquiring new skills and knowledge. Travel indicates that you have a broader perspective and some sense that there is more to the world than the town you live in. All these attributes are desirable in an employee and worth mentioning.
