Staying Healthy During the Fall Season

October is here, and for many that means pumpkins and fall flavors, scare-fests and costume parties. However, here in Florida October has another scary aspect – it’s the beginning of flu season. If you’ve ever had the flu, you know it’s no fun. The fever, the chills, the aches and fatigue. It’s not a fun experience. That’s why it’s a good idea to take a few precautions, especially at this time of year, to help prevent the spread of diseases such as the flu.

  • Good hand washing is crucial. Germs are often spread by our hands, whether we are eating, touching a doorknob, or shaking hands. Take every opportunity to wash your hands with warm, soapy water. This is especially important after bathroom breaks and after you cough or sneeze. If hand washing isn’t always immediately accessible, keep some alcohol-based hand sanitizer around.
  • Take care of yourself. Whether or not you decide to take supplements such as Echinacea or vitamin C, make sure you are eating properly, drinking enough water, and getting enough rest. It can be easy to overlook the value of healthy habits during the hectic holiday season, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
  • If you do get sick, stay home. If you do catch something, you’re usually contagious before you even show symptoms, and then for some time after the symptoms appear. Don’t risk infecting your coworkers or customers. Stay home, especially if you are feverish, coughing, or sneezing.
