Get the most out of your next trip to a job fair by following a few simple recommendations.
Job fairs are an excellent source of leads when you are looking for work. Recruiters come together with the explicit aim of getting to know the workforce so make that receptiveness work in your favor. KB Staffing participates in many career fairs and we have a little advice to help you make the most of your time at one.
Make the Job Fair Work for You
No matter how many job fairs you’ve attended, treat every one like it’s your first one. Don’t get lazy or too casual going in, or you might as well just stay home. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you walk through that door.
- First impressions matter. Dress to impress! For many employers and recruiters, this will be their first time meeting you, so don’t give off the wrong vibe by showing up sloppy or dressed for the club. Think “interview outfit.” You want to appear professional, clean cut, and appropriate. Take it easy on the makeup and accessories.
- Be prepared to mix and mingle. There are going to be a lot of people at the job fair, and you want to talk to as many of them as possible, so put your game face on. Just because one recruiter isn’t offering a position you’re interested in doesn’t mean he/she isn’t connected to someone who is. Make eye contact, use a firm handshake, and make contact.
- Ask for business cards. Show that you are interested in the companies you engage with and their representatives by requesting business cards. Use these to build your professional address book and keep in touch by following up with these individuals after the fair.
- Sell yourself. Have an elevator pitch ready – a one-minute speech prepared that highlights your best qualities and sets you apart from the crowd. These recruiters are going to speaking with a lot of people in one day, so you need to be able to make yourself stand out quickly.
