Training the Right Way

Onboarding new hires can be a time-intensive process. Even if the positions are full-time temp jobs, workers need to have a thorough understanding of what their duties are. KB Staffing is happy to handle the numerous Polk County employment opportunities that come through our office each week, and we want our clients to be satisfied with the employees we send them. One thing that will help any worker succeed in a new position is effective training.

Training for Success
At KB Staffing, we understand that sometimes it’s necessary to train a group of new recruits altogether, especially during busy seasons. However, this isn’t always the best strategy for effective training. An assemblage like this is likely to have people at a variety of skill levels and degrees of experience. You risk losing people’s attention to important details by lecturing them for too long on processes they already understand.

Individualized training allows the trainer to assess each new hire’s abilities, thereby tailoring the training session to cover concepts and procedures that the individual is not familiar with. It’s important to remember that there are several distinct styles of learning and retaining new information. The Kolb four-stage learning cycle is an effective teaching tool for conveying information in a way that just about everyone can benefit from. It involves:

  1. Concrete experience – to provide hands-on learning.
  2. Reflective observation – the process of learning by remembering past experiences.
  3. Abstract conceptualization – when we develop new ideas from reflecting on past experiences.
  4. Active experimentation – taking those new ideas and trying them out.

Ultimately, the best teacher tends to be experience. The “70:20:10 model” of learning postulates that most of us learn 70 percent of our lessons through experiential action, 20 percent from our peers, and just 10 percent from courses. Keep this in mind before scheduling an in-depth training course that goes on for weeks.
