Looking for Work in the Coronavirus Era

Finding a job is always a challenge, and now current events are placing additional hurdles in the way of job seekers.

As the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc on our society, many people are finding themselves out of work, either temporarily or permanently, as businesses are forced to shut down and lay off employees in order to preserve people’s health and well-being. Millions of people in the U.S. have applied for unemployment relief, and many are seeking jobs to keep themselves afloat during this crisis. KB Staffing understands the trials of searching for work under such difficult circumstances.

Focus on the Short Term

The most important thing to remember during this time, is that this won’t last forever. We can’t know for certain how long the pandemic will last, or how long we will be encouraged to stay home as much as possible, but we do know that it will eventually come to an end. In the meantime, do what you can.

First of all, don’t be afraid to take a position outside of your established career field. No one is going to judge you for working an odd job while the world regains its bearings. Many people are ordering food to be delivered to their homes nowadays, so getting in with a delivery service is one option. Certain retailers, such as Amazon, are also looking for staff to help get their online delivery service back on track.

This is also a great time to spruce up the old resume and make any necessary changes or updates. As you look for open positions, be sure that you are tailoring your resume to each job you apply for. Many companies are now being forced to rely on remote employees, so investigate what computer programs or equipment you would need in order to pursue a certain position. Also, be ready for a virtual interview. Familiarize yourself with platforms such as Skype and Zoom so that when you get a callback you are prepared for the inevitable distance interview. If it is a video call, be sure to dress as professionally as you would for an in-person interview.
